Avdem Gardsysteri produces traditional Norwegian cheese and dairy products, such as ‘pultost’, ‘prim’, ‘gubb’, ‘kvitkjuke’, and butter. Also on offer are the brown cheese ‘Huldreost’ and the French-inspired, unpasteurised, red-rind cheese ‘Fjelldronning’. Its cheeses have won numerous prestigious awards, including several in the World Cheese Championships.
The production is inspired by local culture and craftsmanship. Cheese is made with unpasteurised milk, i.e. raw milk that has not been heat-treated prior to the production process. This preserves the milk’s excellent characteristics, and is important for developing flavours and aromas in the end product. To us, this makes the cheese-making process more robust and interesting.
Avdemsbue is a country store dating back to 1878, but the current premises are from 1938. Its product range comprises everything produced at Avdem Gardsysteri as well as cheese from 12-20 other Norwegian cheesemakers. On its beer shelf, between 20-25 Norwegian microbreweries are represented – and cured meats, smoked fish, coffee, tea, flour, juice, jam, and more are also available.
In the newly opened café (shaped as a big cheese) with panoramic views of the valley, visitors can enjoy stone-baked pizza with local cheese, sour-cream porridge, or freshly made waffles.
